An artwork should portray the artistic direction, emotions, or theme chosen by the artist, regardless of the audience's own tastes or opinions.
Remember though: The audience has to look at it. If the general idea is that the artwork is ugly, terrible, unorthodox, etc, it's obviously going to be hated by the audience. it's not the artist who stares at it all day and has to decide what they think about it, it's the audience, and without an audience, you don't have art.
Yes, an artwork should portray artistic direction, emotions, etc of the artist, but you should always take into consideration what the audience is going to think.
It's like.. Submitting something that is almost pornography to a christian art gallery. It's like submitting an airbrush to www.vexels.net. There are limitations of what the audience wants to see: Just because the artist has created it out of their own emotions doesnt make the audience like it any more: You have to think about what setting the piece is going into and what people are going to be looking at it. Like i said before, without an audience, you don't have art. And well, if the audience doesnt like the work your creating, you're unlikely to have an audience for a very long time.

A flaw should not pertain to your own personal tastes
Wrong. You said it yourself. "everybody has different tastes" - a flaw to some person might not be a flaw to somebody else. It all depends on who is viewing the piece. A flaw of say, a painting of a naked woman to some might be the fact that she was naked. The positive areas of the painting could be, say, the colour selection, the way the paint was applied, the paint used. Everybody will see art in a different manner, and so everybody will see different flaws to the piece. It's all relative to the audience.

In future i will make sure i use super clear sarcasm and irony to make sure it comes across as me not being serious! So if i got up peples backs its because im english and we love sarcasm....its the lowest form of wit you see....we are simple creatures! |

you are never forced to accept or reject a critique.
Its all done at your own disgression.
You put people down and get defensive when there really is no need.
Critiques are only to help.
"Just because you were trying to help the artist or be constructive, doesn't mean you are correct, or that there even is a correct way to begin with."
Never once did I read a critique that said "change this... I am right about this... this is the correct way to fix this..."
I just think you might be too defensive, when there really is no need to be. Your work is well done indeed.
And yes, this is a personal rebuttal to your article. |

Heh, I'm sorry, let me remove the 'quote=nemesis' that I stuck in there? *looks around* I wasn't talking to you but on the topic in general. I also don't remember you saying it should be dismissed for hurting feelings? |

I disagree with the beginning. If you have any intention of improving then yes every critique should be taken into consideration- does that mean that you will make move to 'improve' your work in accordance with the critique? No, it doesn't. It means you conSIDER it. You then either regard it as something true or you dismiss it. If you dismiss it dismiss it on its own merit, not because you are 'better than' someone else. Dismiss it not because it hurt you feelings. Dismiss it because you have thought it over, take it into account as a possible truth and then decided that you disagree. Then shut up, move on and be happy with your decision or else take the opportunity you are given in every moment and travel the other road- incorporate what the critic was trying to share with you. |

Nice Article. Good job on it, but I think you just have to find a way between "Not taking critique because I like it anyway.. " and "taking critique because oooh.. I want to improve." (( ; Compromise!
But honestly, I enjoyed reading it.
