Vexel Article - Giving A good Critique - by artisticdork

I love getting a good critique of my work. When I'm done alotta the time I'll ask one fo my friends to actually critque the peice, and when I say critique I don't want "OMGZ!!! I soooOOoo LURVE IT!!!one111!!!elevin!!1" I want something thats has had some thought put into it and actually pin points what is good and what is bad, because face it, in every piece of work there is something that we think can be improved, right? Right!

First I like to be honest and say whether or not I like the piece as a whole. Then I nit pick it and get down to the nitty gritty, and pin point individual elements in the piece that I both like and don't like, such as composition, color selection and so on and so forth. Then if you have any suggestions on how to improve the piece tell the person, I love learning new techniques and such, it makes life easier, lol, and finally in my critiquing process I always try and end with a compliment, specially with a fairly newer vexeler, because you really dont want to discourage them, thats what art college professors are for :P

Basically a good crit will have the following
-overall like/dislike of the piece
-individual attributs to the peice that you like/dislike
-suggestions
-compliment [unlessits just like REALLY REALLY bad :X

aleks at this time i don't know what is the meanin of OMGZ
grrlissa I am so new to vexeling, and when I put something up and ask for help, I expect to hear suggestions and tips, and I
usually write something to that effect, if and when I get good, I probably just want people's comments, not a check
sheet of what's wrong. I agree, I have seen some on here where the same thing is being nitpicked to death. But I
also have seen a lot of helpful tips and ideas from really talented people! I think if you want a critique, ask for one.

I try to do that. I usually read the description and get a feel for what the person was trying to do. Sometimes, criticism just isn't appropriate even if there are things "wrong". Other times, people beg for criticism and then I feel much more at ease when I write the things that could be improved on. If my good points don't outweigh the bad points then I don't comment.

I always also try to comment more on the actual vexelling, not that it's a cool pose or something that was more to do with the original photograph.
Echoia I think that all of you should take into consideration that the word below our vexels isn't 'critiques' but is 'comments'. Not everyone is looking for critiques just because they have comments activated. I do not ask for critiques. I know that sometimes they will come and I accept that but I do not ask for them because mostly I do not care. Until I get to a point where I am totally happy with my work then I do not think I need input from others to tell me where I still need improving. It is frustrating to get message after message telling you what you should/could/need to improve on when you already KNOW and are working on it and it is a step-up from your last attempt. I am not a 'vexel queen' in my eyes or anything but besides vectors I have been creating graphics for many years now. I have also viewed so many hundreds of thousands of them that I think in time I will figure it out myself. Flaws do not always have to be pointed out, you know? Sometimes they can actually be intentional. Unlike many members of this site I do not sit and write long descriptions telling the story of my vexel and what all dirt it' been dragged through. I let people decide things for themselves. Yes, that means that they will tell me something I did on purpose is 'wrong' but that's their misfortune. I wish sometimes people would look at my work and consider whether or not they think I'm capable of having 'fixed' the problem before pointing it out. And stop beating up on everyone- if you see a flaw that's already been mentioned a couple of times and the commenters have made suggestions for improving (tips) then leave it alone. Don't comment just for the sake of commenting in that case. People do get tired of hearing the same thing over and over.

That's pretty much what I do when I critique, too. I don't sound all bitchy and mean, but I still give helpful suggestions. It's a nice process.
