First of all, you will need to catagorize yourself in either of these two positions, before reading ahead. Because I've realized not all people have this problem. So.. when it comes to vexelling. Why do you do it?
A) Because I enjoy taking my time to create vexels, it gives me pleasure.
B) Because I want to see if I can make something as good as he/she and get recognition for my work.
If you are a B'er, then you should definately read on.
Now, to vexel or not to vexel, that is the question. Obviously it's a yes, but here it comes: for what purpose are you doing it? And for what purpose
should you be doing it?
When it comes to vexelling, you hear several people say "I do it to relieve stress.. it's just a moment when I can be away from school, life, and just vexel my heart out in my own time" or "Because I enjoy creating vexels and challenging myself to new styles/stages".
Now compare those repsonses to "I want to be just as good as Jane!" or "I want to achieve realism just like Kira!". And with these reasonings, don't you often find that the end results in comments such as "Damn my vexel sucks.." or "I will never become like Anna!" etc. Well this is definately not how you should feel after vexelling.
What I'm getting at is that a lot of people vexel with the intention to become as good as other vexellers on the site, or to possibly beat them. In this case, they base they're success on comments and on favourites. Sometimes, they might not even feel sucessful unless all the good-vexellers gave comments!
Now this is definately not how vexellers should think when reaching near the completion of their vexel.. nor even at the beginning! With this in mind, it is obvious that most of these vexellers won't ever achieve happiness, because we all know:
different styles come in different forms created by different people in their own different ways. And this you can quote for the rest of yourself because we all know that there is no way anybody could do the exact same as another, there is always something different, and that's what makes
them unique.
So for the people who let themselves down because they compare themselves to other vexellers and how they vexel, please change the reasonings to why you're vexelling. Because 1) You won't ever reach the exact style as they do, and 2) If you were to try create similar vexels, how does that make yours special? It will not make it unique, it will make it normal as it is just like an attempt at what somebody else is doing too. The fact that everybody has different ways of vexelling is what makes them unique, not by the fact that they can accomplish certain styles like others. Infact, each of the more popular vexellers on www.vexels.net all have completely different styles, and this is just to accentuate how important it is to have your goal set to "I want to create my own vexel, something that shows
me!". So next time you're thinking for what purpose you are vexelling, try to ignore all the comparisons, because it won't let you and your vexels shine as much as your potential can let you!
So be original, be original and
shine!

Excellent post! I agree completely!
I'm very new here & I like to see different styles & approaches to creating vexels (vectors). Someone recently commented on one of my pieces & said that it looked "Choppy" to which I replied, "Choppy is my style" I don't want to take anything away from the amazingly realistic looking vexels on here... but that's just not my style... I supposed I prefer things more raw. :-)
I say one should do it for the LOVE... not the FAME! :-)
Just my humble opinion. |

I deffinetly agree with this...but I think its also important to learn from other peoples styles....maybe not try to exactly create the same style, but mix styles you do enjoy to create a completly new style of your own....magnific |

It's true. I think the worst thing to do is to do the same picture as someone else that you want to be like... 'cuz then it's REALLY obvious that you're worse... and it will show all the mistakes people might not have noticed. ^^ |

you have a good point there, but in reality it really depends on why you're vexeling. if you're vexeling to improve it's often easier to improve by comparing yourself to others. even if you vexel for yourself it's hard to make comparisons and say you've improved from one vexel to another because they're both yours.
i don't know. i think it's hard to isolate one from the other. if you vexel and compare to others, you're still doing it for yourself because you want to be good. |

Haha wow. Thanks for this article. I mean, I know the reason I vexel is because I enjoy it. But I try to do it as often as I want to get as good as some of the people vexelling here. But after reading your vexel, you reminded me "different styles come in different forms created by different people in their own different ways" and "that's what makes them unique." So even if my style isn't like some of the others, I guess I'm unique in a way because my style is different. Thanks so much! That really boosted my faith in my vexelling! XD |

@ Adroit: It's not like morally wrong to compare.. definately not saying that. It's human nature to be competative.. just my basic message is saying that you should limit you're competativeness (by comparing to others) as much as you can, because 99% of the time you won't find yourself pleased with the result if you do think in a competative/comparative view. |

Hmmm I agree with most of this, tho I think hat u need to bench mark in order to improve, with out a goal in mind u have no direction... but people should not base their "success" on favourites and comments... just wether or not they are improving and still enjoying the art form. |

Too true :) So many people do that (me too, at times.) It's pointless, really, to compare...it only ends up being sad :(
Great article! |

Thanks for writing this, I agree. Even though I tend to compare my vexels to others. Horrible, I know. |

Great article, Amy. I agree with you as well. My take on art in general has always been simply for personal satisfaction and enjoyment. That's how things should ought to be.
And think of the amount of stress you no longer have to go through once you've eliminated the thought of having to "compete" with others to be an elite vector artist! XD |
