Dear vexellers,
Welcome to the first edition of Vexel trend spotting the must-have style guide for the hip and modern vexel artists. Here you will read all about what is hot & happening in vexel-land, dos and donts, and what you absolutely need to know about the trends for the summer. Shortly, you cant miss this!
OUT:
Stroke-technique hair
Was it first totally hot and neat to add thousands of strands to your vexel-victim with the stroke-path tool, nowadays its not-done. Its old news and totally passé what people want to see is the old-fashioned good way of shading your hair with full pentool-shapes. So face it stroke-fan, its time to throw your old vexels in the bin and begin with a fresh start.
One-coloured backgrounds
So you were just about to add a nice colour to the background of your newest vexel to be done in a few seconds? STOP! This is bad news for the lazy asses around here: the one coloured backgrounds are now past perfect. Really? Really. Cause be honest to yourself, even your mothers tights from the nineties are hipper. Less = more doesnt apply anymore, so before you submit your newest eye-catching vexel, think twice. Be sure to add a cool pattern, a few brushes or even a detailed landscape to the background and you will be the hottest vexeller in town. Then what about gradients? Well, theyre not particularly hip either. Just a hint.
Overused line-art in your vexels
Ah, please. Were so through this. Trust us, now is a good time to drop the line-art and search for something fresh and new.
IN:
There is more!
Noticed the tendency of not just using one tone for the skin-colours lately? Yes, there is more than just one tone in the skin of your vexel-victim, and people have just begun realizing this. Under the slogan there is MORE out there a small group of people are overusing the eyedropper tool to include as many tones as possible in their vexelled skin. And its hip. Hipper than hip. Own this technique and faves are guaranteed the people are loving it.
Gradients
A tricky thing to do, but once you get the hang of it you never want anything else: gradients. Our reports have spotted them everywhere lately and they are good for at least a few drool comments. Be a trendy girl or a hip guy and get a crash course gradienting, but do it quick! You dont want to be the vexeller who discovers this last, do you?
The harder, the better
Time to quit the Hilary Duff vexels, go out and look for more complicated and harder images! People want to see you put a lot of effort in your vexel, not just another pretty & simple close-up. So be ready to pick some tough pictures of high fashion with countless details, a picture with terrible lightning or maybe even an object! Yes, you read it right, we just said object! After men being the hottest thing to vexel, objects are going to be the next trend with the exception of cars anything is possible. Be creative, follow this überhot trend and the world is yours baby.
Trends for the summer
Hey dudes and chicks, Im Vazzy Snexel and I got the job of writing an article about the trends for the upcoming summer. And I couldnt possibly resist, could I? I will personally make sure you get prepared for summers surprising trends, You will be the most trendy vexeller around the place. Now lets get started!
For the early summer in May I foresee people simplifying their vexels. Yes, the simpleness will be back in business and totally hot. No more überly detailed haute couture but plain circles and squares. Back to basic, back to our roots. So beware of the the harder, the better trend, it wont last long.
June and July will bring an incredibly amount of new trends in such a high tempo that not even some of the hippest vexellers will be able to keep up with it. You can expect things like totally red coloursheets, self-made vexelled emoticons, a huge Johnny Depp and Brangelina trend, vegetables and fruit (especially beets, see totally red coloursheets), George Bush quotes as titles, and the like. You have to be one quick guy or gal to catch all these waves, but if you have a natural hipness in you it must be possible. In any case, stay close to your screen and dont miss a single new vexel.
For late August everything will slightly turn back to normal. One trend will play the leading part: farmers will from then on have to deal with their vexelled spitting images. If you dont follow this trend, youll be out. Totally. So take this seriously, bring out your shovels and scoop up some dirt to empathize those hot farmboys as much you can. Especially snazzy heads of straw cant be lacking.
Thats it for this issue, kids. Stay tuned for the next one!

Great article =p I was both enlightened and amused! Never knew about the trends in vexelling. I'd like to be able to develope a personal technique for hair..I like stroke paths tho =P not purely of a trend, but it looks great when used in appropriate hair! e.g. the Declare yourself Vexel by ninjahobbit..<3 |

I think which is the best one, not to orientate it self after trends.
lives your live and lives your art!
what ever a trend! :D |

Love your article Andrea, it reads like a fashsion magazine article. Nice job I'll watch to see if new trends are coming our way. Love it, nicely done! |
Lisette |
Hahaha, I totally imagined this article being read to me by a really smooth kind of low female voice :P Very dry too: the world is yours, baby, oh baby ...
Looking forward too the second edition of this lovely article ;)
George Bush quotes as vexels? That's gonna be hilarious:
"I know how hard it is for you to put food on your family"
"There's an old saying in Tennessee I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee that says, fool me once, shame on shame on you. Fool me you can't get fooled again"
"They misunderestimated me"
@ "Cleavage" : Don't take it too serious, it's just a joke ;) |

Interesting article.. made me laugh, sounds like something an MTV vj would say but then about hollywood etc. :P |

Gosh, everyone, I think she was just -observing- the trends rather than really saying, 'You have to follow this!'
(Did anyone notice how on the first image she has the words, 'So yesterday.' then two images down is Hilary Duff? Forgive me, I'm tired.)
I didn't get the second image at all : / But I did get a good grin out of the last one. I also think you did a good job- this stuff has been going around ; ) I'm sick of people saying, 'I'm sick of...' *giggles*. |

I really like this article!
Though I'm not a big fan of trends, I still think a lot of people do follow trends!

But...
I liked reading it, yes!

lol I like the whole over-the-top fashion mag style ;)
I don't think "Vazzy" was meant to be taken seriously, though, so all you line-artists can breathe easy! |

how bout some individualism? if you like "stroked" hair, then do it. if you love hilary duff, go ahead and vexel her (even though i too am tired of seeing her) .. vexelling should be about making yourself happy with the process & the end result, not whether or not its "hip & trendy" to everyone else. |

Interesting article :) It'll be fun watching the new trends :) |

Nice artical, but in the end result it all comes down to a person's style. Im keeping up with my strokes. |

I dunno about the whole "shapes" thing... it just seems... boring? lol
I do agree with you about Hilary vexels, though.
I wish I knew how to do gradients... I have no clue. |

Good stuff in there, it will be interesting to see if it comes to fruition! |

Haha .. stroke-fan XD
I'm a stroke fan.. when it's done well (like everything) . I think the good ones have varying sizes and colors.. so it's not so.. liney.
I looove the more skin color trend .. I can't do it for crap but I love when other people do it, it looks so good. All that time people would always shun using posterized/eyedropper colors but they were wrong mwahah.
I didn't get the end bit.. Vazzy Snexel.. lol wth :P |
Kyla |
Well written, but I think it all comes down to personal preference and a lot of what you say is out I still believe to be in (if you can pull it off). |

lol. It's kind of true, but it's still funny.
Great article, I <3 it. So fashion magazine like. |

I think it's still very popular though - you have to admit, it's a handy technique, not just for hair. :| I do agree the true shapes are cooler - and the final outcome still looks better than raster strokes.
"George Bush quotes as titles" I love that one <3
Interesting article - thanks for sharing :) |
