Ooh it's like a no-reference party today :D

Anyway.. It's been a while since I attempted something without a reference.. I don't think I've ever managed to get this far with one so I'm happy.

Here is the sketch I started with (if you could call it that.. it's like a bunch of lines and random paintbrush lol): http://www.vexels.net/images/temp/noref_s.jpg (scuse the hair.. it's totally off shape.. well excuse the whole thing really)

And here is how I have gone so far:

The mouth is kind of crap :| It's not very.. pouty and it looks like she's doing this :| lol.

The way you did the reference looks so weird but the more I looked at it the better an idea it seemed. I've had such a hard time shading my sketches! Doing it like that would let me see more of it more quickly and edit it and not have to drag around points every other layer to see if I can fix what I did wrong.

It looks pretty good so far- especially the lips. They look sparkly.

How do you do it? I just kinda used some of those proportion rules that were stuck in my head from somewhere (that's what the circle and weird lines are) and then just blotched in roughly where the shadows would be with my paintbrush.

: / I just take a bare-bone sketch and start shading it in shape layers, one at a time. It ends up looking warped most of the time because I don't tend to shade much/anything besides the nose and eyes when I draw. The cheeks, chin, forehead and the bridge of the nose are all left to be done later and when it takes so long to do it's pretty hard to be consistent.

Oooh, that looks really great! :D I've tried shading some of my sketches, but I've given up all of the times. And I didn't even get past four layers. Keep this up, because it looks great! <3

Wow that looks great! I think that the nostril to the right (my right) is a bit lower than it should be. As it is now, both nostrils are on the same level, and because you're not looking at her straight on, I dont think that's how it's supposed to be. But I cant be entirely sure. When in doubt, look at yourself in the mirror :)

And I just submitted my first no-reference vexel yesterday! It was so much fun and very.. satisfying to know I did it all out of my noggin. I think you're doing super so far, so good luck.

That looks great!! I haven't tried a no reference vexel yet :x I'm way too scared, lol. That looks awesome though! I kinda agree with what Katy said...Except to me, it's not so much the nostril but the skin part (on my right) of her nose, it looks too light imo, than again I don't know if you're gonna do much more shading along the sides her nose..I can't wait to see the next progression, that seriously looks awesome! I wanna see the eyesss :p
