How friggin high is the bar now? Vexels are incredibly amazing..like.. on a whole new level lately. I remember a year ago, even 6 months ago, what we use to think was "amazing" would now be considered so mediocre.
I was going to do a then and now thing but I didn't want to offend anyone in the "then" section :P Here are some of the newer vexels I'm talking about:

Where are vexels going to be in another year? O___O
I would say "they can't get any better!!" but that's what I thought a year ago too! |

Vexels of the future scare me. Vexels are intimidating enough, even in the present haha.
Although I am excited to see where they will progress to :D |

hehe...I was just thinking about this today! You must be reading my mind eh?? :p I think the next level of vexels might be the "no reference" vexels...at least thats what I predict :) There's gonna be loads of no reference ones...therefore there's going to be a whole lot more creativity and whatnot :) |

I hope so! Imagine that kind of work which is made from scratch :)

Or maybe realism will be kicked out of the world. *evil face*
I hope so, in some way.
Edit: I don't hope so in another way, though. |

Yeah. Everyday we have new vexelers who improve reallly reallly fast. On a year, vexels will be like some sort of... I can't even think about it.
But I'm sure each of them will be quite an amazing eyecandy ;) |

It makes me kind of sad that realistic vexels are the only ones really taken seriously now though. |

I am not trying to come of snobby at ALL by saying this, but super realisitic vexels do nothing for me. While I think it takes a lot of talent and patience to do them, I think vexels that have a style and flair to them are much more impressive, or when someone totally changes the photo, or when they draw something on their own. I really hope that is the direction that vexels go in |

I agree. Why not just look at the original picture? I like there to be SOME uniqueness to the picture (different hairstyle, lineart, or maybe something that isn't just a girl's face), not just an exact copy of the original.

Heh....I guess I have sort of the same problem...try finding a tutorial for Photoshop 4 or 5! Or anything under 7 for that matter. Hah, in Photoshop 4, the pen path doesn't curve at all. So its really hard to make a smooth looking vexel. Also, ANY of the hair tutorials are out of the question. |

I feel like everyone is improving so fast and that I'm just behind on everything. I can't keep up. :P I can't even imagine how it is in a year.. that thought scares me. xD |

I remember last year, looking at one vexel, I don't have the link, but it was a gradiant vexel of a black girl and her head was facing towards the left... Anyways, I was looking at it in class and since it only goes to about half-boob area, my teacher thought I was looking at porn (but only scrolled barely).
And not naming anyone, there are some vexel artists I thought were SUPER TALENTED last year and now, I look at the pieces of theirs that were so "amazing" and I'm all...It's not as good as it used to be... |

Hmm yeah I agree. I remember back in the day when everyone's expectation of a vexel would be something less. Nowadays, people are trying really hard to get it EXTRA realistic. I'm not a big fan of the sooperdooper realistic ones, but it is sad that those are the main ones recognised.
I also agree with Andrea, how people seem to be improving so well and they start vexelling and it's like WHOA. Although I think Andrea you have improved muchly. ^^ I'm just too lazy to practise. |

Like what Raelynn and zummi said, it's about a uniqueness in vexels. You can't really define a 'vexel' now, there are to many layers in realism. People have seemed to have forgotten what a vexel is, a vexel is a representation of something not a realism cartoon. They make me insanely jealous but do nothing for me. |

I agree with Raelynn also, realism isn't all there is. Sure, I love them lots of times, but 'uniqueness' is what we all love. <3 |

im not even new and thats how i feel, i hardly get comments these days but back then when i was considered good id get a few, but then all the awesomness came out of everyone and i was left behind i consider my work bad.
i remember when there was sarah, natalie and linda were the best vexellers and the most realistic, now theres hundreds that can do them so awesomly, just look at my watchlist and u will see how many people are so great especially at realism.

Same here. Still I want my vexels to be realistic when I go for it. And once I know I have some skills I drop it try another thing. A new thing. I'm developing my style reaaally slow. But I guess by getting better at creating realism vexels you learn a lot. I mean you learn how to do the skin detailed, how to control the path-thingy, you get to know which colors apprear on skin [colors like green, blue...] and you get to know the skin way better. It helps you if you're into drawing [traditional] also. So I guess that's why everyone kinda goes like "ZO-OMG".
But I also hopes that that what Raelynn said will come true. Hehe. That'd be awesome.
More creativity, please!
