I don't know if it is just me but it seems that vexels today are very one note (somewhat). It seems that what people strive for is realism and recreation of a photo, I mean don't get me wrong the technique and skill and patience that it takes to create a realist vexel is very good and something that should be praised upon but I just think that there is so much more out there that can be created rather than just recreating a photo to be realistic.

I don't know if it is just me but I feel like vexels are stuck in some sort of box, I mean its not that I hate realism or anything or hate recreating photos because I obviously do it myself, I just think its that Im searching for something more. I don't know if anyone else has felt it but sometimes don't you get tired of vexeling females in the same technique over an over? I know I do, Its like Im getting bored with the whole thing and I really don't want to because I love vectoring I just think that there needs to be some broadening of what is out there. I mean there are SOOO many talented people I wish I could see more of what they can do besides making a pretty picture...

I think that it has come to a point where vexels are now completly judged in comparison to realism vexels, if you notice the ones with the most layers or insane realism they have the most favorites and the most comments even though there are so many simple beautiful and abstract vexels out there I feel like they don't get the same chance as realism therefor people go for realism because it is more recognized and praised upon.

I don't know if Im the only one whofeels the way but I just am curious to here what others think.

In all honesty, I'm sick of realism.

My pieces, yes, they reflect some realism, and in some cases, are reproductions of photos, but can you honestly tell me that they look SOOO realistic?

Yes, the vexels and their artists are incredible for being able to create them, but really, they're just starting to get on my nerves. I miss the cartoony vexels, like my recent delta one. Hell, even my ocean one is more cartoony than half of the ones that have been submitted lately.

Thank You! I mean I mis the simplicity and cartoonyness of what they used to be like I think your older pieces are a great example of that like your Ginny Weasley vexel and the Gisell Bundchen (sp??). I think there were a lot more styles back then (like 2 or 3 years ago)

I feel the exact same way you do. Everyday (I know it's sad I think about vexelling everyday, lol) I try and think of different ways to vexel, different techniques etc. There are some artists here whose work I LOOOVE because they are unique (Marleen, verucasalt82, Echo & Linda to name a few) I love seeing a vexel on the main page knowing that that specific person did it, with their own unique style, their own special way.

Just like you, I AM getting tired of vexelling the exact photo...why recreate a photo??? I know it takes skill, patience, but I'd like to look at a vexel and think (wow..alot of creativity went into this, rather than..wow this person has alot of patience) Don't get me wrong I do love realism, I do it myself and love the outcome of it, but I'm getting to the point that when I vexel the photo the exact same way it looks I get bored easily.

meh..I basically sound like you did in your post..but it's just I also feel the same way :)

Mm... I agree and disagree. I've felt like there's a lot more diversity lately- just go look at the latest three pages of the gallery, there are a lot of original illustrations, very cartoony vexels and non-female vexels.

Me? I vexel females because they have gorgeous eyes and I have a thing about eyes. Even my original work lately focuses sooo much on the eyes that I barely finish any vexels because once that part is done I need to move on and do it again.

As far as the realism vexels- I've felt there's been a good deal of people lately 'stuck' in a very specific style and it just doesn't interest me. I've always been much more impressed by someone using 3 layers for an object/face and making it recognizable than someone using 200 for the same thing. My goal for a long time was still to achieve realism and the better at that I've become the better I've become at other styles as well.

On the one hand, I'm not keen on photo recreations either - I feel like I should be praising the photographer, stylist and model. However.. I have tried uber realism.. it's friggin hard. I've never been able to pull it off so when I see someone who does it well, then that makes me drool because I know how hard it is. That is probably why they get the most favs. Something with minimal layers - even though it looks great and is far more creative etc. It looks easy (even though it's really not). People think .. "yeah I could do that, it's just a few layers". That's my theory anyway.

I start *every* vexel with good intentions to change things and try out new styles. I end up getting very frustrated and saying fuckit and going back to the "same old" thing.
For the females thing.. I adore interesting fashion orientated photos. I find face portraits and waist up portraits pretty boring unless there's something really interesting or different about it... pose, lighting, interesting clothes etc. A plain looking girl standing there like she's in a KMart catalog is boring yeah.

I love seeing the different vexel styles.
A quality vexel is a quality vexel and I'm not really sick of seeing any particular style as long as they are done in a decent quality.

I agree, I mean I like vexeling females and there obviously is some enjoyment in creating art of females considering it has been done for THOUSANDS of years but I think that since so many people enjoy it or whatever or its convinient I think that it creates the image that vexels are of females...like it is some sort of law of vexels...

Maybe we should have a no-human-vexel day where we delete anything that is human *evil laughter*

I don't have much time right now but yes I have noticed that the uberrealistic ones get the most attention, like that's how a vexel is supposed to be. I am too thinking of some original style that is beautiful and creative at the same time, that doesn't "just" recreate the photo. But it doesn't seem that what I'm doing is very appreciated - my realism vexels get the most attention.
Vexels seem to become more and more about skills and skills and skills. Don't get me wrong though, I still like realism vexels and I admire people who are able to do them but.. it's not like it's anything new. They are just becoming more and more realistic, and there is a difference between realistic vexels with a cartoony touch and realism vexels that look very very much like the photo. I for one know I like the first one more.
I feel like in half a year we almost won't be able to tell which vexel is photo and which not.

I feel the same way.
Almost every vexel is indeed compared to an uber-realistic one.
We need new stuff! Let's bring it.

Lineart's getting way too popular, too. And people use those ugly (in my opinion) chunky black ones that outline curves.. and lips.. yeeccchh.
I love realistic ones, but I really hate it when people think realism is the only 'good' thing.

I personally enjoy 'realism'. Though I see where you're coming from, I don't believe super realism (where you really can't tell if it's a photo or not. and i mean REALLY can't tell) gets a higher preference than let's say, 'realism' with line art.

I feel like in terms of the vector world, Gradient Meshes are the closest thing I've seen to Actual realism. Like So close, you'd think someone took a picture and soft blurred it. I completely admire the gmesh pieces of artist such as Paul Bush, etc etc. Though I do drool at them when I see them, and am amazed at how they do it, I have absolutely no desire to do it myself.

And this is mainly why: The way we do vectors/vexels here at v.net it's not quite close to that form of realism. People seem to like to see those lines that are a main characteristic to vexels. No matter how much we call it "realism", i think it's anything but, and still retains a stylistic aspect to it, that is obviously lacking with pieces that are airbrushed or gmesh.

some pieces have done super realism (very well mind you), but weren't popular. And I think that's because so much goes into every piece of artwork: Lighting, positioning, the model *celeb in most cases*, colors, accuracy, etc. So i think THOSE things fuel favorites more so than the realism aspect it. It's hard to say that just because it's realism, it'll get favorites/comments.

Even non-computer art, i think I tend to be impressed with a pencil drawing that looks so much like the model it was made after. Because offline, I do a lot of art, especially pencil sketches. And no matter how hard I try, I can never get it to look like the original. It's a skill that's really hard to acquire, and I admire it.

There will always be popular styles, that some may consider "trends". But i feel there's a lot of diversity here on this website, and other art communities as well.

Well, imo, I feel a lot of people do realism because they want to see how 'good' their vexel can turn out and each time they set themselves a new goal. I think it's more personal than it is showing what people like (which may be realism). I mean.. many people can perfect certain styles of vexeling, but with realism, you can always get 'more real'. Also, a think a lot of people who do realism actually find it hard to do a simple vexel - so they stick with what they know. I'm not sick of seeing realistic vexels, I love being impressed with someone's ability to create something truly realistic. I won't say I like realistic vexels better than lineart or simple vexels, because a lot of my favourites are of vexels that aren't realistic. Obviously people are going to do what they find nice to look at. IF i hate cartoon vexels, I won't make one - what's the fun in that? People do what they enjoy, and I really don't think there's a shortage of vexel styles. I feel vexeling females will always be the norm, just because they are more fun to vexel.. and that's not only with vexels - it's with many forms of digital art (especially fantasy/airbrushes/vectors). Females are what beauty is, and people want to look at beauty, bottom line. I don't want to vexel some fat guy drinking a beer, I want to vexel something attractive. In all, I think lately the height of realism in realistic vexels has reached a whole new high and that many people want to see how realistic they can get. I also feel that females will always be the norm and that change is brought on by inspiration. When people start doing new things, more people will start doing new things. If everyone vexels realistic females, than that will be the norm.

I think people get in a comfort zone. They are really good at something, get a lot of favorites.. and comments.. and they just continue to do that because it's a safe bet.

The rule I set for myself is, once I think I have mastered something to a certain degree, it's time to move on and learn something else. There is so much more out there. Animals, landscapes, fantasy, abstractions, robots, eeeeverything.

I am tired of realism. I just dont get the point, once you're really good, of just making a photo look like a vexelled photo. Challenge yourself. Add something to the photo, change it up, do something different!

Lately I have been getting VERY bored with the photorealistic vexels, but yet, out of all of my works, the ones that are more photorealistic are apt to get more praise. Lately I have been trying to step BACK out of the box in which I was caught in by creating peices with animals as the focus or changing the clothes a bit or whatever. So far, I feel that realism is beautiful and all, but all it takes is patience, not all that much skill.
Kind of reminds me of tracing, in a way.

BUT, I guess that I am being somewhat hypocritical...but still.

Obviously, I enjoy the realism vexels. I guess the only way to look at this is from your own perspective. As for the comment above about "not all that much skill," I disagree. I do agree however that simple line art is much harder to accomplish than people peg it out to be.

The thing with realism is, to me, my vexels always seem like vexels. It may be considered realism, but I will always see a hint of cartoon in it. I am definitely trying to do line art or simple vexels... but, like Linda, it always just ends up turning to realism. I mean, if I could create something like Annette's "Classic Sophistication," I'd so be there. But, I probably couldn't do that if I would endowed with all the powers of vexelling in the world.

But I see everyone's point. The realism tends to get more favorites. But, that really can't be helped. I think it's just the way people are; and there's no real way to change everyone's point of view on the subject. ::goes off to try and create something new::
