Is it because of poses, lighting, angles, features .. ?
Just wondering, as I've just saved a lot, a lot of reference images because of the hairs. xD |

Simply if I feel like vexelling it.. the picture must give me the little voice in my head that tells me to forget about my homework and immediately start vexelling. ;)
I don't really know which aspect of the photo (like challenging hair, beautiful clothes etc.) makes me picking the photos I pick. If they look interesting.. and of course a good shot.. stand out.. and ehr like I can be creative with it. ;)
So in other words, it has to inspire me! :) |

Same here. I'm currently in one of those times that nothing inspires me, though. :S I just started a new vexel, but it's already confusing me and I don't know what I'm gonna do to it..

It it just jumps out at me or if I go "Hey, that would make such a cool vector!" then I'll probably do it. And normally, I like the more interesting pictures such as those with themes, or funky colours. Sometimes it'll just be "Look at that hair!" and I just start doing it. If it doesn't immediately inspire me but I still think that that pic is something that I could really use in the future, I just save it onto my comp and leave it there to collect dust until one day I just get that sudden burst of "Hey, what about that picture from three months ago?" or whatever. |

: )
Reasons I vexel a picture:
1.) It's of Fiona Apple (I have at least 3 of those in the works right now)
2.) I have to (client/collab - I join collabs so that I am 'forced' to vexel somethin/someone because otherwise I won't)
3.) I want to practice a technique. (my latest vexel of Alyson Hannigan! I actually have wanted to vexel that picture since I started vexelling but it was just toooo hard for me for some reason until now. I still didn't do as good as I wanted to but at least I gave it my best) |

Same here. I found a very cool picture to vexel, that should inspire me, but no decent idea of how I want to vexel it comes to my mind..

Pics need to have "something something", you know ??
No matter how beautiful a picture is, if it doesn't have that something I don't enjoy vexeling it.
They need to inspire me, and at the same time they need to be vexelable, and eyecandy. |

Well, since I search out artists and celebrities I like at the moment, I find one that looks nice to do and is interesting in some sort of way to me. Eye candy for the win! |

Usually there is someone I have in mind. Lately I've been on a Scarlett Johannson kick because I like her features. So I would just google images for her and pick out the best ones, or search websites. Sometimes I like to choose photos that have a certain thing, like sunglasses or a flower, if I want to get better at doing that image, or if I want to practice taking that part of the photo out.
However, right now I am trying to do no-reference landscapes and such, and while I might LOOK at a photo to see how light sources look on things, and how water flows, Im not really using any real references to trace over.
Im also doing a few vectors for others/clients/ that I dont really get to choose the photo, although sometimes they'll give be a bit of freedom. |

Hmmm... sometimes it's because I like the person. I've got a GORGEOUS picture of Johnny and June Carter Cash. The lighting, everything... it's beautiful! I don't know... sometimes I just think the picture is interesting. There's no real set reason why I decide to vexel. |

I am usually attracted to images that have that "something" like Samantha. I avoid plain people in plain clothes in front-on portraits because they're boring. I am also not keen on celebrities because usually their photos are all about them, but with a random model.. there is usually something a bit more interesting going on, you know? It usually tells a bit of a story rather than just "this is *famous person* and this photo will sell purely because it's of *famous person*" I hope that makes sense. I'm pretty picky about the person being really attractive.. I don't really enjoy vexelling every day or ugly people :P I also look over the picture to find anything that looks a little odd, like blurry sections or weird shadows.. even if it's a natural shadow that looks a bit weird. I am pretty picky. |

: / I find front-on faces to be really difficult. I dunno why ; / they just are.

meh, if i see an image i stick it in to psp and start vexelling, if i begin to find it hard i just close the program even if i've done alot of face shading and hair and stuff.
The images need to look vexable (i don't know why i call it that) they have to be, as linda said atrractive, the lighting has to be good (i can't deal with dark areas) and it just has to be a pefect picture. |

It's always about the composition; the position of the body/face, the makeup, the clothes, the lighting; everything like that. |

They have to have like already said, "something". Even if a picture is completely beautiful, it might not have the vexel-approach. And it has to inspire me... |

Some pictures just speak to me. The one I'm working on now, I found on a celeb's myspace... of him and his girlfriend, he captioned it "the reason I'm breathing" and I was like "oooh that would make a spiff vexel!" so I started vexelling it... it's black and white and very grainy though, but I love the pic so much that I'm vexelling it (I even feel slightly stalkerish but then I think "who cares if it's Mikey, he's nothing more than a guy who posts a pic of him and his girl on his Myspace") and yeah. That's usually how I choose images to vexel. Just ones that go BOOM in my face. |

If I find an image that gives me the inspiration to vexel, I'll save it. Most of the time, it's a picture with character. Like one I just worked on and finished today, is actually... sort of an original. From a group picture that I got taken of me and my fave band, Stellar Kart. I'm in love with the bass player and his face was so awesome, I just had to vexel it. It was different for me, so that's why I chose it. But yeah, like AndreaFlowers said... "ones that go BOOM in my face." LOL! |

I pick mine based upon the postion of the pose, and the picture meaning. The picture has to speak out to me before I vexel it. Lots of pictures has its own special meaning and such, so if the picture doesnt, I dont vexel it b/c I like a picture with meaning and it has to speak to me like others said above. |

I rely a lot on color when I choose an image. If the color isn't interresting then the work will most likely bore me. I also really like drastic angles. |
