Yea I read tutorials on base layers and such, but how do you muenuever your way through it on Photoshop. It seems easier and faster than doing the ordinary 600 100% opacity like I did with all my vexels.
The funny thing is that it looks just as good, but in less layers and im guessing less time.... hmmmm?

well, i'm currently working on my first base-layer vexel doing it the "linda" way. haha. ^`P basically, you choose a medium color for the skin as the base, then you use white on soft light for highlights and black on soft light for shadows. make sense ?

Yeah, *points to maganie's post*
In PS CS2 though, it'll do the layer blending mode and opacity automatically (when you create a new layer and create a shape on top of the previous) so it can be quicker.

I <3 base layers! They're much more simple than the other way, imho, because they give you much more freedom, and it's easier to change things if you mess up. You just make one 100% opacity layer, and start adding a whole bunch of lighter and darker layers on low opacity above it. I usually use more than just black and white, in fact I don't think I've ever used just plain black, I eyedrop the darkest and lightest colour of the skin.

Baselayers > add some other layers as well > make more of those "other layers" (you know, some parts of the skin even seems to be blue n stuff) > keep that stuff simple > last part: add shadows and highlights with the darkest and the brightest color. O___o
Base layers are love, though.

Base layers is accually easier and quicker all though I have done both and like both of the effects. Base Layers allow you to shade a little messier and its way easier to work without a referance because its like real painting more than 100% opaciities I think and it accually looks cool but you have to be really precise with doing 100% opacities but it gives a real clean look but if you don't do it right it looks jagged and a little strange lol
