So here is my business website, hopefully going to be fully functional early May:
http://cartaetc.com/
I need opinions on the design and colors. The colors will change from season to season, and these are the colors I chose for my summer season.
I have not validated it, and Im going to actually attempt to with this website. Everytime I try I get so frustrated that I just make sure it works in 5 different browsers and give up :\
Anyone have any validating tips? |

I really like it, so clean! The colours are more spring-y to me, but that's probably just me, haha.
Yep, I like it. |

the title/header is kinda just popping out at me. I don't know if it's just me. Maybe I've been staring at the monitor for too long.
The colour scheme is very nice! And it does look very seasonal :)
I get annoyed with the validating as well. Just remember to close tags like the img, and br tags and that kind of thing. Oh and don't forget to add the alt to the images. |

I think it's looking great, and I love the colors idea.
I dont think there's anything wrong with it, either. The desing is simple and pretty, and it's easy to navigate with.
So no critics/tips from me :D
There's a tiny mistake on the word "Products", though ;) |

The 'c' and 'u' in Products need to be switched. I think the colors will work for all season except winter. |

And about the validation thing, if it doesn't validate - then it doesn't really 'matter' as long as you're semantically coding correct. I mean, look at Google and such. :P

Google doesn't validate!
No, it doesn't. Neither do Amazon and a host of super-successful ecommerce sites. So what? People say this as though it was a clinching argument, but why?
There are commercial reasons why a very high-profile site might not embrace Web standards. Branding is very important to ecommerce sites. They're not just interested in content delivery but in making their visual design look identical for as many customers as possible, even the one still using Netscape 4. That puts more focus on backwards compatibility than on forwards compatibility. Alternatively, coding quality may be unimportant because the site acts mainly as a portal to somewhere else. Google's success is based on its search engine and database, not on the quality of its front end, which is purely minimalist and functional. In that respect, it's misleading to compare the HTML and CSS of Google with that of a content-driven site.
Furthermore, because those sites currently don't use Web standards doesn't mean they wouldn't benefit from doing so. Using semantic HTML with external CSS saves bandwidth, and saving bandwidth saves money. When a homepage gets a million hits per day, even a small reduction in its file size makes a substantial yearly difference. Using Web standards also makes sites more accessible, with consequently no need for maintaining separate 'accessible' versions (as Amazon once did), and makes it easier to carry out site-wide redesigns.
Finally, because a company is commercially successful does not mean that it uses best practice. Big companies are, generally, not the leaders when it comes to ethical matters. Because major clothing manufacturers use sweatshop labour doesn't excuse a small manufacturer from doing the same. Because major ecommerce sites use outdated, non-standard, non-semantic code doesn't excuse other sites getting it wrong.

I think its realy pretty! I too think the color scheme is a little springy but spring summer whats the differance! Lol If I were to do summer I would add a blue color in there somewhere, like for water or blue sky you know? maybe the blue instead of the pale corel color :D |

For "image here" that will be a photo right? I think a lot depends on that. I think it would look really nice with a photo there.. at the moment it's a tad dull with those colors, even though they're nice and all. And yeah don't worry so much about validation - if your website functions properly that is the main issue. I doubt a potential customer is going to not buy from you because one little image doesn't have an alt tag.. let alone even look at your source code :D
It does look beautiful though :) |

Dammit! Haha I KNEW I would spell something wrong. I am the queen of typos on graphics.
Thank you so much everyone! I
Linda - Yep a photo is going to go there! Im really excited about doing the photo shoots too. Im going for a sort of Gap/Old Navy feel, and Im going to do 'themes' for the individual product pages (just a theme in the photo, the website colors will stay the same). Like mini golf, or poker night, or a beach theme, and have real models (real models as in my friends who can pretend to be real models).
Im glad I had you guys proof it or I probably would've let that typo slip in!

Oh Im sooooo excited to see it done! I love the theme idea! are you going to photograph the accual model or like the hand or the ear or whatever or is it gonna be like how Urban Outfitters (urbn.com) displays their stuff...you know full body... |

I think Im going to try both and see how it goes. For the Poker Night theme, I have dice beads, so I would have maybe a hand rolling dice and show a bracelet that has those beads. Or hands holding cards up to a face with a sly smile. I think I will also do full body shots for maybe the front page. All the individual product pages will have the item on a white background though, to get a better view.
Im trying to have the website launched by May 15, but I dont know if Im gonna make it :\ |
