Dana, I think Jason and Tigerah would like a selection of vexels to choose from? o_O
indeed..choice is what we want b/c everyone has a diff style and way of approaching the same thing
the hosting should never be looked at as a cost of $0
everything has intrinsic value..the hosting itself for first prize is well over $200 in value($232 hosting and domain for first, and $116 for domain and hosting on the 2nd)
and im giving the option to tradein some of the hosting for .nu if thats what the winner(s) wants($56 value) in addition to the $60 cash via paypal
so all in all up for grabs is $408 worth of prizes in addition to signed cds and pictures from tigarah herself

the one thing i am bothered with. although it´s a wonderfull appertunity for everyone.
there is this site. vexelme.com
you have to pay 100$ and 1 artist will make the vexel.
now you only pay 60$ and can choose whatever you want from different artists.
so i feel it´s because you don´t want to spent too much money on it. and want to make sure you have enough choice for your money.
because seriously the hosting won´t cost you a thing.
I agree.

But Dana sort of has a point to how much they're paying, except hosting does cost a lot. :/ Well I might try, but I'm better at semi-realism than cartoony. |

Plus, this contest allows others that aren't part of vexelme.com to be able to win alot of money for doing something they enjoy.

I don't see the problem with the price. No one is being forced to enter. We usually do this for fun and don't make a single dollar.
I doubt I'll enter though. Maybe ... After all I'm done with my exam a few weeks before the deadline ... |

I agree, not everyone has the opportunity to be a part of vexelme, there are a lot of great artists here but there can only be a certain number of people who can participate in that site.

I'm not whining, I'm personally insulted by this whole thing though. I've had one comission in the last month, one more for the upcoming week, and usually go two months or more without one. Why would anyone ever pay for a vexeller to straight up make something if they could just throw pennies at the lot of us and see who scrapes up the most?
If it was just a contest like the regular contests here with a prize- that would be totally different. This is not like that. Instead of taking home your blue-ribbon squash, you are handing it over to the judges.
I wasn't suggesting they use vexelme.com.
And... phew! I don't have to participate? That clears up so much : P |

i think the point echo is trying to make is that this isn't like our usual contests because the vexel afterward is being used for a commericial type use, so it's more like something that is ussually comissioned.

I agree with Lauren.
I'm considering on entering anyway since Tigrarah said she'd prefer the "artistic" types. i haven't experiemnted there yet but I know I'm too impatient for uber-realism. I don't know, I'm not so concerned about the prize but I do understnad how Dana and Echo and others feel.

Here is what tigarah had to say!:
"here some images i like when i look at gallery:
http://www.vexels.net/vexels/10041
http://www.vexels.net/vexels/10022
http://www.vexels.net/vexels/9975
http://www.vexels.net/vexels/9949
http://www.vexels.net/vexels/9918
and many more ;) i like artistic ones lots, realisitc ones not SOO much.... but all are cool!!! ;) so,yeah i m so excited!!!"
on that note i still think there should be variation so if there were some realistic ones fun ones thatd be good too
that makes me feel so much better about entering.

so who is entering? it seems no one wants to... i never enter comps cos i never win, but this is good because you get money and a domain (even tho i already own 2) which are good prizes, the only thing i have problems with is the psd issue with each folder of layers, i would prefer just layers of individual things like flag, face, arm, body, etc like that. not piece by piece-cos im a merger LOL
and even tho $60 isnt much, i could definatly do with some money. people are complaining it isnt much because its a commerical piece-i half agree with that, but im also broke so i need the money and will take it haha :D plus this is a piece to put towards my folio...
meh anyway hopefully i have time to enter i have a few other vexels to do which are priority

that makes two of us b0o! :)
I would like to enter, but I'm not sure when I'm able to start, I have two very busy weeks...
I think it's allright if we make layers of individual things... that's the way I work too... I'm not feeling comfortable giving away a file with every path (illustrator) separated...
I'm guessing the flag, face, shirt, arm (etc) merged in individual layers is fine???

You ask us to keep the proportions the same but complete the flag too? thats not possible, couldn't we just make our own size thats over 1200 wide?

they are complaining because the vexel will be for commercial use, and many people here "sell" vexels for commercial use at a much higher price

if $60 + $216hosting/domain value= $276...then if that isnt enough i dont know what is
the hosting/domain should never be considered a value of $0..if you were to buy those from me thats what they are worth
one could always sell that to someone for cheaper if they werent going to keep i suppose so say half off, thats still $168 in value..
the domain can be upgraded to a .nu with a loss of some hosting a $56 value.........
Thats all money.....its not free to me!! i pay for the servers every month! I dont own the internet nor the domains I am going to give the winners! Other companies do and I have to pay the price for them which is already stated

I also think a nice thing about this competition that is yes, while people do pay higher prices for comissions, we are also retaining the right to use it in our portfolio, and it is almost like a "published" work, and if you're interested in being in this line of work, that is a very nice item to have in your portfolio. It is also through work like this that you build contacts, and others see your work and ask "who did that?" and you get more work because it's being use comerically. I've always seen the commercial work I do (and I happen to do quite a bit of it) present better opportunities than my non-commercial work. It's not always about the money you get right off the bat.
So those who are complaining I think need to look at the bigger picture. Or else just ignore the thread. |
