Okay, I'm stressing big time here.

I'm working on my majorwork. Currently, the vexel file size is 47.5 MB. i havent done all that much (400ish layers) and the vexel is SO SLOW to work on. I dont want to open a new file to work on it, because it defeats the purpose (and where i'm working i cant just open a new file and start there)

Has anyone encountered these problems before..? Could it be graphics card related..? My graphics card is fairly old.

Yeah that happens to me.. no idea what is is, graphics card or ram or something.
Normally I just save it as a different file and then flatten everything so far but it sucks you can't do that, how frustrating. I'm no help sorry :(

^ Well at least it's not just me.

It just seems odd, because I was going to test whether it was just the size of the vexel or not, so I opened my "Surfs Lost" vexel which is lord knows how many layers and 57.5mb. That didn't lag at all.

I wish i knew what the problem was so I could fix it.. Even forking out 100 bucks for a new graphics card would be fine, so long as I could actually work on this thing ... *pulls hair out*

That used to happen to me on my old comp..maybe it is the graphics card? Or maybe you need a higher fbs? Although I'm sure your processor is fine seeing as your other file opened fine. hmm...does this vexel have more layers than your 'surf's lost' ? More layers may cause it to lag more because it's laoding each layer individually..i dunno. lol

well when i have like too many shapes or w/e, it goes so slow, and i was working on a vexel, it went so slow, the pc restarted and the file went corrupted. the file size was so small, like 14mb, but i had to have had like a minimum 500 shapes on the hair. so i could suggest if you're fnished with the hair then just flatten the hair layers. it might help

Well, Surfs lost was certainly more than 400 layers...

I just tried increasing the amount of RAM that photoshop uses to 80%. It fixed the proble mfor a few seconds, but now it's back to its laggy nature. :(

A Screencap of what ive done so far, the actual size of what i've done so far, and the amount of layers so far.

Sometimes when i'm working on a high resolution image i get that.
I usually increase the size of my image which slows down reactions so i dunno.

Sometimes when I'm working on a vexel, even if I'm running like Firefox with it, it really slows it down a lot, so I have to use the program all by itself... are you running other programs when vexelling?

Close prgrams you don't need that allways run in the background, like Windowsblinds or Firefox, as that takes more RAM then IE, msn just programs you dont genrally need.

Up-ing the amount of RAM that Photoshop uses never last long, its just a temporary solution.
It could be your motherboard, it's just slow and no matter what RAM youget it will still lag because it can't keep up.

Do you save styles when you work in Photoshop? Like if you go to Layer > Layer Adjustments or something like that, where you can add dropshadows and strokes?

When I was at work I would be working on print designs, and it would be so slow and I would get errors, and then it turned out that I kept saving my styles and it ended up being 67 GB worth!

So thats something to look into. Or maybe you need to purge your history?

That happens to me all the time. If you check your CPU usage ( Ctrl+Alt+delete > Performance) it should be pretty high when that happens. I usually close whatever graphics program I'm using and restart.

That always happens to me for certain files. Like if I make one small change, PS loads everything really slowly, except only for some files. I don't know why, it always happens for the same few vexels, no matter when I open them, but I have ones that are larger in size that load everything perfectly fine.

And the only other program I usually have open when vexelling is WinAMP.

When I use photoshop, I normally only have MSN running. I open firefox if I have to search for something, but I normally just end up closing it.

It's certainly not my motherboard: That's less than a year old and it was top of the range when I bought it.

I don't normally use layer adjustments anymore. I don't think I have at all yet :o
How would I be able to purge my history?

and Berit: Thankyou very much. :)

I think you can purge your history under the Edit menu. It will just be a regular option.

It's probably your RAM.. how much have you got?

You said you opened a bigger image and it didn't lag - how long did you have the bigger one open for? The length of time something is open for affects the amount of memory it uses.

Assuming you're using Windows XP, go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Advanced (tab) > Performance Settings > Advanced (tab) > Change ... Under "Paging file size for selected drive" make sure "System managed size" is checked.

Sarah just save that file, open a new one with your flattened version and then when your done just drag your folders from the new one to the old. Or just explain to your teacher your problem and I'm sure they won't mind...

Well, I have a solution that works for me. I create a new raster layer, fill it with a solid color and work in my vector shapes over that. It's like when the computer isn't trying to draw vector over vector it stops lagging for some reason. I'm currently vexelling hair for one of the vexels... i'm... vexelling *ahem* and it was lagging badly until I did that and then ALL lag went away. This doesn't really work I would think if you go about tracing everything from the photo, though : / If you're working where you make a basic shape then a few shades then fill in the rest on your own it will work better.

All of that is fine :O I have 700+ mb of RAM (cant remember exact specs). I didnt have the larger one open very long when I was "testing", however, when i was working on it in the past it wasn't terribly laggy.

I've been doing this. It's a pain in the ass though.

I've never worked with vexel shapes. :P i work purely in raster, because i'm lazy.
