When looking on the different progressions, it's funny to see how people actually do their Vexels. Like for istance, some people trace every colour as a shape.

I'm an illustrator guy, so I usually start with a base layer, and then work my way into the middle, sort of like rings in the water. I bet that especially you Photoshop users out there approach it way differently, or maybe not.

How do you start of your vexels?

usually when i vexel a person, i start with the skin and usually begin with one of the lightest colours, then add more layers till ive reached the lightest part and then i usually get to the darker tones, sometimes i get bored of it and start vexelling something else, like the eyes or lips... so yeah thats how i work

I do it in parts (ie. skin, hair, eyes, shirt, pants, etc.) I usually start with the skin because it's what I like doing most and usually finish with the hair because it's the most time consuming. In between I just do whatever I feel like doing. It all depends on my mood really, each vexel is different, but usually I always start with the skin.

hmm that's a very interesting question. I use illustrator too, but unusually when i'm doing something like the skin, i work from inside out, and i've made a keyboard shortcut to keep sending the layer i just made to the back. and then i usually vector in parts, like skin first, then eyes, and lips. Sometimes I jump to other parts while i'm not finished with another cause I tend to get bored and switching it up helps keep me focused lol

I start of with the faceshading and I start with the lightest parts, slowly going to the darkest parts. Then I do the eyes, lips, some more work on the nose... and then just whatever I feel like doing. :P

Like Kyla said, it kind of depends on the mood or something. I do about every vexel differently. :P Sometimes, I use base layers and work with white/black+opacities, sometimes I make colour shapes, sometimes I do everything black and white and then colour it, or I just mix it all up :P

I always use base layers, I've tried a few times without them and failed miserabley. I usually start on my favourite part of the image.. be that the skin or hair or clothes or whatever.

I'm different, i can't use base layers, i put a base down and then use that as a guide to wher the face is and kinda like not to colour over the lines as such, but yeah i start inside out.
I do the skin, then the lips because you need the skin to be right for the lips to fit kinda thing then the eyes and well the hair because its the aprt i like doing the least.

I decide what style I want the vector to look like. I use a base layer. I do the easiest parts then the rest.

I do the skin first by making a base layer (im also a illustrator lover) and then I just follow whatever shading of the face gets lighter... I ususally do the hair last if there aren't any clothes. I don't follow an order.

I usually do the face skin first (no base layer) and then lips, eyes, hair, neck, clothes, and any other skin.

Absolutely in that order. I tried vexelling the eyes before the lips once, and then I had to delete the whole thing and start it over again. It was kind of scary. D:

And no base layers for me-- I can never get them to look smooth, so I just go lightest to darkest.

I sort of do it like that as well.
But I always do all the paths first and all the coloring in the end.

I've been working in parts... starting with the face, and moving on from there. For each part, I go from the lightest color to the darkest. For the latest one I'm doing, I'm working with the oh-so-hated transition layers, so when I'm done working on the main colors, I'll go back and create layers in between.

I don't make any sense, and I don't really have any way or order.
Sometimes, I start with the skin & facial features, the hair, and then clothes. Other times I start with the hair... it depends of how's the image, my mood, and a bunch of things.
And the way I vexel always changes, as well. I'm still using the try-and-mistake technique ;P
