I've been trying to do portraits with realistic poses without references so this is like, step 1.

First, I choose a reference and then 'sketch' over it using shapes, the line tool and the curve tool.

After that I make the reference tiny and move it so I cannot trace over it but can refer back to it and start the lineart.

I don't really like it so far, but it's good practice? I dunno.

Update:

It looks good ; ) Her eyes are needing a little bit of focus, though... unless that's part of the look you're going for.

I think it looks really awesome! If you want some minor crits, let me know, I see a few things here and there that could be worked on to make it more realistic, but Im not sure if thats what you're going for, so I wont post them yet.

Seriously though, thats really good for no reference.

^Thanks! I think one of the crits will be the the fingernails! I'm working on them right now and I would really like to hear your other critique.

Im not too worried about the fingernails, because its such an early stage. The pinky looks really nice because it shows the skin around the nail.

On her hand, the outer part of it closest to the edge of the piece, it could use a little more curve and "fleshyness" to it. Sometimes drawing hands can be hard because there is fat to them, and some people dont like to include fat in their drawings, but its just a fact of life.

The way her hand comes off of her wrist looks a bit weird, like the angle is wrong or its too sharp, or something. I cant exactly pinpoint it, but Im sure you'll work it out.

I would add a little bit of a curve to the under arm of hers. Again you're in the early stages with the straight lines, so Im sure you've thought of these things also.

Her face is very round, which doesn't bother me because its cute looking, but I would work on defining a chin as you progress.

The eyebrows, this is just a matter of opinion, but I think eyebrows with an arch are more intersting than flat eyebrows, but again thats up to you.

Im excited to see how you progress :D

A small update. I changed the face shape a bit, edited the nails a bit and added a bit to the eyes. You can also see the reference here.

No, silly : P I meant one's looking more up and the other more down (the pupils).

Gaahh!! I need to fix that now!

Thanks Rae! I'm working on all those things.

The eyebrows right now are just a base for later, when I draw them hair by hair.
