Anyone here live in LA or the surrounding areas?

I'm heavily considering moving out there next year and I'd love some tips on the area.

I live in "The OC", but it's close enough.

Depends on where exactly you wanna live. In the city or the suburbs? At any rate, expect lots of traffic jams on the freeways. The LA/OC area's got the worst congestion in the nation. Which also sucks, by the way, because you're probably gonna get NOWHERE without a car. No one uses the metro. Or the bus system. Essentially, public transportation is moot over here. Parking's generally not a problem in Orange County, but in Los Angeles (the city, not so much the whole county), you're usually gonna have to find a lot and pay.

Not that it's bad here and all; I love where I live and can't wait to move to LA. It's just I tend to focus on transportation lately. >.>

Uhm, expect lotsa really warm weather. And practically no seasonal changes. This summer, we had a heat streak where we went for a month over 100 degrees. It cools down around October/November, though, to maybe around 60 degrees? Despite this, every December you're bound to see people walking around wearing fur parkas.... we're weak against cold. T_T

There's not much I can think of right now besides the hot weather and the necessity for a car. By brain's absolutely shot right now, which is partly a result of warmer than usual weather. >.> I'll edit or something if I can think of anything else.

EDIT: Oh yeah, more concerning weather: layering your clothes is a must, as it's usually colder in the morning, blistering hot in the afternoon, and then cool again in the night.

I'll be living in Pasadena, I want to go to the Art Center college over there :D

Delaware, where I live now, can have some brutal summers because we have so much humidity, and I love love love warm weather, so I think I will be ok over there (I hope!). I will miss snow though, but thats what northern CA is for, right? :)

And I will have my own car, thankfully.

Do people surf a lot and are Californians typically how they are displayed on TV? Whats the normal hobbies out there and stuff like that?

Thanks for replying!

I went to Cali for the summer and the only thing I can tell you are that the men that go into liquor stores always wear board shorts, t-shirts and a baseball cap. Seriously.

Well, most people, if they want snow, always go to Mammoth. There's a few places a few hours away where you can catch some snow, although sometimes it's just packed snow.

I personally don't surf since I never got around to it (and I'm too busy...), but yes, a lot of people do surf. Pasadena's a bit more inland (I think?) for daily access to a beach, but I know some people who hang out practically every day surfing. Unless you live in Newport Beach, or Long Beach, or Coto De Caza, odds are you're not going to find people much like the ones on those TV shows. Which, quite frankly, is a good thing.

Really, Pasadena's quite normal. I haven't visited there much but we don't have many special customs. Erm, we do have a lot of diversity, so there's a lot of cultural stuff you can find.

I can't really say too much more than generalities, as I live in a little bubble and am a high school senior, but it's not hard to get adjusted to CA life. Buy a pair of Rainbows and some shorts and you're set! XD

Thank you for all the information! I dont own one pair of shorts and I've never really worn them before, so I'll have to get used to that :D

Lol, I don't like wearing shorts. I'm so un-Californian. XD

Anywhoo, I just had a thought: Pretty much everyone drives five over (in many cases, ten over) the speed limit. In fact, the police officers don't care [although everyone slows down anyways just in case]. At any rate, if you're not five over, don't be in the fast lanes.

I've been there...it's a GREAT place to be...I absolutely love it there, although things there are NOT CHEAP, in my opinion...but it's a wonderful place to be, I think you'd really enjoy being there.

It's so weird, when I lived in Vietnam (A few months ago), I wore shorts everyday- to school, weekends, everyday. The only people who wore shorts at school were people who had to because of religious reasons. Now, when I wear shorts, I feel SO weird.

Im going to go there for school, so for the first two years of living there, student loans will cover my costs and hopefully I'll build contacts and get a job that will help me sustain a lifestyle there.

I want to do print design for like.. movie posters and DVD covers ("entertainment design") in a small design firm.

I actually think it's quite reasonable to live here, but then again, I don't have much to compare with it, seeing as how I've lived in SoCal for pretty much my whole life. I think the price of land here is ridiculous, though. Prices for houses shot up a year or two ago; it's slowed down, but it's still ridiculous.
