How do you edit a transparent PNG (ex. the current competition) so you can work on it?? This must be the newbiest question ever, kind of embarassing that I cant even start something lol. Thanks in advance.

You're not supposed to edit the lineart, but work under it.

Frito0406   03rd October 2006 - 03:24 am

so then how do people change the color of the lines? if you have to work under it does that mean u need to make whole new pen paths under the real lines that u cant see so u can fill it up? by edit it i mean draw on it and add fills and change the color of the lines, The current competition is lineart up for competition is an example, how are people getting it so they can change the line color and add fills? thanks

Nope. What program are you using? In photoshop just take the lineart, make a new layer on top, fill in the empty layer with whatever color you want, and then on your keyboard Ctrl+G.

Frito0406   03rd October 2006 - 04:05 am

you know of the current competition lineart girl, i know its possible cause some of the entries have done it, the pen lines are edited to a diffrent color, other than black

Just do what Carina said in photoshop then bring it into Illustrator. Another way is to use layer styles (color overlay).
I don't use Illustrator but surely there is some kind of grouping option or something where you can make the lines a mask?

why dont u edit the color of the lineart by going to the edit hue saturation thing in photoshop and changing it to colorise and then make the lightness higher so it changes to any hue..

Frito0406   03rd October 2006 - 06:01 am

ah. i dont have photoshop, just illustrator, does anyone know how to color one in only illustrator? and why is the PNG all the sudden placing all jagged and pixelized in my illustrator? thanks

Frito0406   03rd October 2006 - 07:35 pm

ok i got photoshop
what do you mean by make a new layer and fill it in with whatever color then control g? i do this and all it does it make a group, and the lineart is behind the filled shape i made (same thing happens in illustrator) , i try to put the layer under the png, but the pngs white fill isnt transparent and i cant see it, im using the "transparent png" file from teh current competition.. all i wanna do is color it like everyone else has, never thought it would be this complicated lol

The layer that you grouped onto the lineart, fill it with whatever color you want it to be. Using layer styles (color overlay) might be easier.. just choose the lineart layer and go to layers > layer styles or something like that.

Frito0406   04th October 2006 - 03:11 am

fill what? theres nothing in the layer i grouped onto the linart png picture, whats suposed to be in the new layer? color overlay just turned the entire workspace into whatever color i chose lol this is frustrating, thx for the help but i must be misunderstanding or something,
why isnt the file for the competition in .ai format or .psd so you can work on it?

Maybe I can understand from another viewpoint.
Can someone expalin to me how they completed their entry for the competition with the Tami CHan Lineart?? It cant be that sophisticated lol, thanks

Why is it not in .ai or.psd? It'd just be the same thing. As you can see, plenty of people have been able to work with it fine.

1. I copied the lineart and pasted it into photoshop (new canvas).
2. I created a new layer by going to Layer-->New Layer.
3. This will be an EMPTY layer. I filled it in with whatever color I wanted.
4. On my keyboard, I pressed Ctrl+G
5. File-->Save For Web. Choose 'png24'. Save it into any folder.
6. Go to Illustrator and make a new document (ctrl+n). Press ok.
7. File-->Place
8. Go to where you saved the lineart and double click.

And then that should do it. If you can't do that, I don't know what else would work.

There's nothing in it because you haven't filled it yet, that's the whole point, to fill the new layer!

The layer style should be put on the actual line art layer. This is a totally different method to creating a new layer and grouping it.

why isnt the file for the competition in .ai format or .psd so you can work on it?

Because opening a PNG and opening a 1 layer PSD is exactly the same.
It's not in AI because I don't have the AI and I don't think Natalie even uses AI.

1 done
2 done
3 its supposed to be empty and u said u filled it with a color, so i made the entire layer green
4. with nothing selected but the green layer i just made i did control g and made it a group
5 done
6 done
7 done
8 done
this leaves me with the Tami chan linart (entire pic even white fill all around the lines (none of its transparent) and my green layer under the pic
it was gettin me somewhere which is good, but now i have what i did before , a nontransparent picture of tami chan that i cant color.. lol

Look, that method worked for everyone else, so you're doing something wrong. Don't question any steps, just do it...
The layer is SUPPOSED to be empty! The layer will be green before you group it!
This is frustrating =/ I want to help but that method works.

Hey, i was hopin for my list i made after yours to just give you a more in depth idea of what my problem is, it was not my intention to question your abilities, lol, i finally got the file to be the pen lines with a transparent background, i had to drag the file onto illustrator, file > place or copy and pasting wasnt doing the trick, it was giving me a nontransparent one, why i dont know it was frustrating, all i could do was go on with my own methodd from there, working under it with the pen tool which is working great, finally im having some fun, im almost finished with my entry.thanks for all your help. =)
