If you think somebody's a great vexel/vector artist and you want to vexel just like them, great. But if you want them to 'teach' you, don't just ask them for some tips. Please be more specific because I don't know what to say if you ask me. I'm really glad that you want tips from me, I'm flattered, really. But sometimes I just don't have any general 'tips'. Nobody has any 'secret's. A tutorial by your favorite artist will not make your vexels a million times better than before. You have to practice, be specific, and develop your own style.
Practice is the key.. there is no magical secret, tutorial or tip that will instantly make you a star.
I'm not being crabby lol I just thoughtI should point this out! I hope you guys don't take this the wrong way :). |

I do think that some have their secrets. But even if they do, they won't share it. xD
But anyways I agree. Just "Give me tips.." won't work. Ask how I did .... the eyes. Or the lips. But just don't ask how the whole vexel is done. xD
Thx for pointing that out, Carina.
Still, those questions do not hurt, either. Just ignore them, I guess. |

YES I agree!
I don't have much to add because you said it all.
I think it was Manda that asked me for tips on eyebrows.. that's good. Asking for tips on "clothes" is a bit silly! |

I never know what to say when people ask me for tips.. I keep saying that I do nothing different than other people.. I use the same techniques as several tutorials.. lol. I'm rubbish at explaining too. |

^Same here!
Which is just repeating what I said, just because somebody is a good artist, it doesn't mean they have some sort of secret technique or filter. It just means that they practice a lot. They do the same thing as the people who aren'tas experienced. |

I completely agree.
I also think a lot of people should with hold some of their secrets and I will tell you why from personal experience.
A while back I did a turorial of Keira Knightley and I told people how I did my stringy hair... and even though A LOT of people didn't follow the whole thing on how to do stringy hair and pretty much made it look awful - loads of people were producing vexels with stringy hair... and it kinda made me think "hang on - this is my thing and even though I am flattered, I would like my work to be that little unique"
My point is - trade secrets are good - give hints and tips to people - just don't give them all! |

Shaz I so agree with you! Of course there are some secrets.. and you won't tell them all because then they wouldn't be called "secrets" anymore and... dunno, maybe I'm just not that "open" ...
And everybody wants his vexel to be unique.. of course.. that's why I don't share all my secrets, ... I don't have any though. But I wouldn't share them. The only thing I shared is that I take every color from the original picture so when the skin has a slightly green tone around the eye.. I do that and that's problably what made my realism vexels look kind of realistic but others than that I do not have secrets so far. Just slight differences from the other techniques which other vexellers do - gosh.. does this make any sense? xD |

Yap. And the guys in white do not mean to do you any harm when they come to pick you up.
Well, I think you had a "sort of secret" - you're having one colored base layer and all the others are b/w (exaggaration) .. that's quite different. Or ... at least seldom. And... wtf. Linda you don't need a secret. Your vexels rock. |

My secret is that I use a filter for the WHOLE thing... I don't actually vexel - I am an impostor! Mwahahahaha I have been lying all this time hehehe ;) |

I totally agree Carina. A lot of people are asking me to make a tutorial. I'm flattered, in a way...but even if I had to write a tutorial I don't think I would add anything that hasn't already been said. It's all a matter of practice and patience. No one of us was taught how to vexel, we all learned experimenting and practicing. All of us have developed a particular style that make our vexel different and recognizable...but all of our vexels are based on the same technique...
Shaz, when I read your comment I thought "hey, I wish there was a filter that did the whole thing, that would save me from spending hours and hours on a damn skin shading!"
But then I was like "Hell, no! How would I spend my days if I didn't have to vexel?" lol. |

I enjoy skin shading! It's a very underrated element :(
People always cream over hair and eyes and sometimes lips... skin shading doesn't get enough praise! |

Eh! I like skin shading! (I But I don't like realism hair. xD And clothes.
Anyway... vexelling rocks. Everything is fun to do, otherwise I wouldn't touch it.
Edit;
Shaz, you're Icon / Avatar hasn't been working for quite a while now. I wanted to write that a couple of times but I always forgot. (I |

I'm beginning to love skin shading, it's really rewarding when you get it right but sometimes I can't and it's just a bitch :(

Nah that's not a secret, that's the method I used in the tutorial I wrote.

@Linda.
Well I have to stop sucking up now because I never read your tutorial. I just never have the patience to read them through, I prefer learning things by myself. xDD
@Shaz
Well then.. xDD
Actually it looks kind of stylish... it's just the size that bothers me. Because it's not a square. xD It's higher than it is wide. ( ...you can't tell me that that's a correct english sentence. ) xD |

Hehehehe, Berit : ) I don't read tutorials either I don't have the patience. I look at the pictures and usually can tell what people are doing that way. |

I agree with Shaz, which is why I have held back on doing a tutorial. I have probably gotten over 50 requests for one, but I dont think I will ever do one. I like helping people out and giving generla tips, but the fun part of art is learning! |

But even if someone makes a tutorial it doesn'tmean that you can make vexels instantly, and people don 't get that. I made vexels for an artclass assignment and peope where like 'hey, how do you do that?' and expected me to just tell them in a minute how to do it or to teach them so that they could also make such things.. but that's not how it works. They don't get how much effort and practice goes into it.. |

^Yep, that's EXACTLY how I feel. You know, there are a bunch of people going around saying 'make a tutorial!' 'make a tutorial!' because they think that if a good artist makes a tutorial, then they'll become just as good as the artist.
But it's NOT like that. Linda, Shaz, Annette, well, they all had to practice to get to what they are now. You've seen their earlier vexels, right? They had to practice. They didn't have a magical tutorial to make them good.
The key to vexels is practice.
Don't worry about patience.
That comes later, you don't have to 'work on your patience', you just have to keep practicing and practicing makes you more patient. |

Yes, practice is most important. But I have gotten a few tips from tutorials, mostly how to use the program because I wasnt really familiar with it when I started vectoring. But I think everyone have their own way to do things, and even if you read tutorials you'll get your own way of doing things. But tips can be helpful. |

^Yes Manda, some people are that desperate lol. Lol I'm joking. Your vexels are great! You've improved SO much.
I think it's annoying when they email you or IM you and when you say you don't have any overall 'tips', they get all disappointed and some of them get pissed off and say 'Just because I'm not the best......'. |

Go the super-private kind-of-bitchy route like me and they'll leave you alone. I flat ignored the few requests for tips and tutorials I've gotten : ) |
