I really suggest you get the hang of basic photoshop skills and techniques before you try something like vexelling - it is more of an intermediate-advanced type of thing.

Hi Brian,
To select the layer transparency you need to make sure you're right clicking on the small image on the layer palette and not the words of the layer name. What exactly are you having trouble with ab out the desaturating and posterizing? I wrote that tutorial a long time ago and I don't even own the site any more so I won't be updating it..
